Attachment
With a secure attachment a child has a 'secure base' from which to explore their world, have new experiences and develop their independence.
Children with a secure attachment are able to manage their own behaviour and control their emotions. This self-regulation cannot come about until there has been a sustained period of co-regulation with an emotionally available adult.
Children are better equipped to relate to others and develop healthy inter-personal skills if they are secure in their own identity, which comes from having a secure attachment.
Conversely, the lack of a secure attachment can create difficulties in all the areas mentioned in the preceding paragraphs. Children can be preoccupied with safety and security, negating their capacity to pursue academic learning.
The information that our sensory systems process constantly throughout the day affects us all differently. Some of us are dysregulated by rising noise levels, some of us can't concentrate without it. Some of us love to relax with a deep pressure massage whilst some recoil at the slightest touch. Even subtle differences in smells, sounds, tastes, touch sensations and movements can change the way we respond to the world around us.
By looking closely at all the different sensory systems and each persons specific likes and dislikes we get a better idea of how to change the environment and add in activities that allow us to be alert, calm and focused throughout the day.
The age old debate as to whether it is Nature or Nature that has the greatest influence for human development turns out to be another one of those obvious answers: it's a combination of the two!
That is not to say that we can just sit back and let things happen naturally (which would actually be an unnatural thing to do) - we can provide a nurturing environment for young people that can help offset some of the negative influences that have shaped their lives.
The long-term effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) is now recognised worldwide but has yet to gain traction in mainstream schooling.
The PLAN Approach attempts to incorporate key concepts of Nurture that are essential to allow children to feel a sense of security and self-worth that will allow them to settle to learn in school.
